From First Ride to Confident Canter: How Our Riding Pathways Support Every Age

Introduction

Starting Riding Lessons is an exciting step, whether it’s a child mounting a pony for the very first time or an adult returning to the saddle after years away. At City of Derry Farm & Equestrian, we believe that great Riding Lessons are about more than learning to steer or mastering transitions — they are about building confidence, developing partnership with the horse and progressing in a safe, supportive environment.

That’s why we have created structured riding pathways for both children and adults, ensuring every rider feels guided, encouraged and empowered from their first ride through to confident canter work and beyond.

Supporting Young Riders Step by Step

For children, Riding Lessons are designed to nurture both skill and self-belief. The journey begins with balance, posture and gentle control at walk. Early lessons focus on helping young riders feel secure in the saddle while building trust with their pony. Alongside riding, they are introduced to grooming and pony care, encouraging responsibility and respect for animals.

As confidence grows, lessons progress to walk and trot work, improved coordination and simple exercises such as polework. These sessions develop rhythm, control and independence while keeping learning fun and engaging.

For those ready to advance further, canter work and more technical exercises are introduced gradually and safely. Riders may also prepare for Pony Club badges or competitions, depending on their interests and goals. Throughout every stage, our coaches prioritise steady progression and positive experiences, ensuring children feel supported rather than rushed.

Welcoming Adult Riders at Every Stage

Riding Lessons for adults are equally structured but tailored to different life experiences and motivations. Some adults arrive as complete beginners, while others are returning to a lifelong passion. Whatever the starting point, we focus on confidence first.

Beginner adults are guided through balance, position and safe horse handling in calm, one-to-one or small group sessions. Understanding horse behaviour and communication is a key part of early Riding Lessons, helping riders feel comfortable and capable.

Returning riders often benefit from refresher sessions that rebuild balance and familiarity. We progress at a pace that respects individual comfort levels, allowing confidence to return naturally.

For intermediate and experienced riders, lessons can include more technical flatwork, polework and skill refinement. We also support riders in developing confidence in open spaces and preparing for more advanced riding opportunities.

A Pathway Built on Support and Progression

What makes our Riding Lessons unique is the clear pathway each rider follows. Whether eight years old or fifty-eight, every individual receives guidance suited to their ability and goals. Our experienced coaches, well-schooled horses and purpose-built facilities create an environment where progress feels achievable and enjoyable.

From that very first ride to a balanced, confident canter, our Riding Lessons are designed to support riders at every age and stage. By combining structured development with encouragement and care, we help each rider grow not only in skill, but in confidence and connection.

Wherever you are beginning, your journey can start here — and we’ll guide you every step of the way.
